Dynamic Duo

The Woman’s Club of Carlsbad (WCC) has been an important part of the Carlsbad community since 1925. Members Kelly Northcott and Kae Gernandt share the important position of Vice President of Ways and Means. “Kae and I head all the fundraising activities that WCC does,” said Kelly. “All of our fundraising activities support the philanthropic programs that the WCC supports. The fundraising events are also outreach and fellowship events. They allow women to connect with each other and use their skills and gifts in ways they may not get to do in their professional life.”

The fundraising will include two big events this year. “Our major fundraiser for four years now has been the Carlsbad Holiday Market, where we create home and holiday decor ourselves and also invite vendors to participate. This year’s CHM is set for Nov. 3,” said Kae. “Additionally this year we’re hosting our second annual Christmas in July on July 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. This will be a preview of the items we’re selling at Carlsbad Holiday Market,” added Kelly. “We also put on a large bunko event in the spring.”

Kae has worked as a certified shorthand reporter for 36 years, reporting depositions in San Diego County. She loves to craft, working with paper, wood, glass, fabric, and more. “Kelly and I now dream up the majority of the items we sell at the Carlsbad Holiday Market and CHM Christmas in July,” Kae noted. She loves to travel with her husband and children, and adores doting on her two grandchildren.

Kelly is the designer and owner of My Heart Beats, which is a greeting card company helping women connect, encourage, and celebrate. “I started it because when I was in direct sales, I built a team and customer base by writing notes. It was hard to find ones that expressed what I wanted to say,” Kelly related. “So I started making them.” She and her husband just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.
