Carlsbad is the Perfect Basecamp for the Hindman Family’s Adventurous Lifestyle
Living Life to the Fullest
If you had to sum up the Hindman family, they may best be described as “on the go.” From mountain biking and skiing to overseas travel, this family of five rarely sits still.
Parents Kurt and Renee moved to Carlsbad in 1998 and have been in their current house since 2003. “We love living here because we have a view of the farms and Calavera Hills,” Renee said. “We can ride our mountain bikes right from the house.” Their neighbors share their active family lifestyle. “We have met some of our lifelong friends on this street,” Renee said. The family also appreciates the city’s commitment to open spaces, knowing that their view and access will never be developed.
Today, Renee has her own photography business, Renee Hindman Photography. After years of teaching elementary school and taking photography classes for fun at Palomar College, she took the leap of faith to start her own business and has never looked back. Kurt, with years of experience in construction management, is now a partner at Hazard Construction, one of the oldest heavy highway construction companies in San Diego.
Their three daughters are active in and out of school. Cory, an eighth grader, is very involved in choir, theater, and dance. Reese is in sixth grade and plays volleyball and softball, as well as participates in show choir. Their youngest, Tyler, is involved with robotics and plays soccer and tennis. All the girls participate in the youth programs at North Coast Calvary Chapel and the Junior Lifeguard program. They love camping and going up to their cabin in Big Bear. “Our children have been avid skiers since the age of three,” Renee said.

But what may stand out even more than their activity level is their international travel experiences. Renee and Kurt have both been around the globe, and they are now including their children in the adventures. From Chad to Shanghai and Thailand, the kids have been traveling since they were infants. “I want my children to experience culture, poverty, getting out of their comfort zone, and building confidence,” Renee shared.
Being ready, able, and willing is part of the Hindman’s family modus operandi. “Our children have been on the move at a very young age. They can pretty much roll anywhere and anytime with a moment’s notice,” Renee said. “We are hoping these experiences and feelings carry them throughout their lives.”
