Voice For Children

When Maurice Voce became an empty nester after his only child left for college, he wanted to fill the void by continuing to work with children somehow. Maurice had spent many years as a certified high adventure adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America, and he shared, “I wanted to find another organization that would enable me to work directly with kids and would provide the training and support needed for me to be successful making a difference in their lives.”

Then one evening Maurice happened upon a commercial on television about the nonprofit Voices for Children. Maurice recalled, “The public service message piqued my interest – and tugged at my heart – enough that I attended an information session. It was there that I learned that the Voices for Children organization administered the Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program for San Diego County. From there, I began the process of becoming a CASA.”

As an advocate who is officially appointed by a juvenile court judge, Maurice has access to his assigned foster child’s records, and he speaks up on that child’s behalf. Maurice admitted, “Taking on a new case can be a challenge, but the one-on-one time you get to spend with the child is a sweet reward. You realize what a stabilizing factor you can be to a child who is facing uncertainty and constant change. The personal impact on you is profound.”

An especially heartfelt memory that Maurice enjoyed as a CASA was when he got a call from one of the foster children he was advocating for. Maurice remembered, “He asked me to come and spend time with him because he missed me. At that moment I realized I was making a difference.”

The Voices for Children organization has many fundraising functions throughout the year. On May 20 there will be the 6th Annual Wine, Women and Shoes event taking place at the historic Canfield-Wright Estate in Del Mar. The biggest annual fundraiser is the Starry Starry Night event that takes place Sept. 9 at a private estate in Rancho Santa Fe. Group: Voices for Children
Mission: Voices for Children transforms the lives of abused children in San Diego County by providing them with volunteer Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). We believe that every child deserves a safe and permanent home, and to that end, will review and monitor every court file in the system, provide a CASA to every child in the foster care system who needs one, and advocate to improve the lives of San Diego County’s foster children.
