Meet Carlsbad High School’s Standout Graduate Henry Gardner
Henry Gardner, a recent graduate of Carlsbad High School (CHS) and resident of Calavera Hills, is a modern day renaissance man. He is an exemplary scholar, a star lacrosse player and a passionate volunteer both at CHS and in the community. “I’ve served as the president of CHS Best Buddies since my junior year, coached Pop Warner Challenger League for three years and coached Special Olympics for five years. My participation in these organizations has given me many wonderful friendships and a deeper understanding and empathy for people with disabilities,” revealed Henry.
When Henry is not volunteering, he can most often be found on the lacrosse field where his talent and leadership have been recognized through many awards, including the 2014 CIF San Diego Section’s Boys Scholar Athlete of the Year and the 2014 San Diego High School Sports Association Scholar Athlete of the Year. “I started on the varsity lacrosse teams all four years of high school, was named the defensive MVP and made the All-Avocado League second team twice,” said Henry, who is grateful to his coaches over the years for their encouragement and help in reaching his goals.
“In the fall, I will begin my freshman year as a biology major at Dartmouth College. I hope to eventually work in a lab where I can manipulate plants to be more disease resistant and productive.” – Henry.
As far as academics are concerned, Henry is an AP scholar with distinction and a member of the National Honor Society. He enjoys writing, but has found his true calling in the subject of biology. “In the fall, I will begin my freshman year as a biology major at Dartmouth College. I hope to eventually work in a lab where I can manipulate plants to be more disease resistant and productive,” related Henry. He then hopes to take this knowledge and implement it on crops in developing countries in order to create “super-foods” that can help put an end to world hunger.
Even with such far-reaching goals, Henry still knows how to let loose and have fun. He is the founder of The Improbables, a comedy improv troupe that performs benefits for youth organizations, and works at Legoland as a comedic improviser. He loves ’80s music, counting the iconic ’80s band Flock of Seagulls as one of his favorites. Henry also enjoys hanging out at Carlsbad State Beach, a place he will definitely miss when he leaves for college. However, he is excited to join his brother, Sam, at Dartmouth and to embark on his next adventure, which is sure to be one filled with success.
