This Year’s Carlsbad Prix Features Cycling for All Abilities
Have you ever wanted to be a part of big-league bike racing? Well, now’s your chance as another Carlsbad Grand Prix cycling event is on its way. Hosted by Swami’s Cycling Club, this year’s event will take place on July 20 and will feature over 700 junior, amateur, professional and Paralympics hand cyclists (via Challenged Athletes Foundation) competing in timed races for prizes as well as 3,000 spectators!
The full day of races starts at 7 a.m. and will finish in the evening. The 0.9 mile course, located on a platform above the Carlsbad Flower Fields with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, will host races throughout the day including a Carlsbad Family Fun Race. “Families will ride around the course as many times as they can in twenty minutes, and each member will receive a raffle ticket for each lap completed,” explained Fred Muir, Event Director. There will also be a kid’s race for the tykes too inexperienced to complete full laps on the track.
Fred emphasized the central focus of the event: to provide an inclusive cycling race for all. “We will have a Challenged Athletes Race for the second year,” he said. He continued, “We also place extra emphasis on junior and women racers. These categories get short shifted in other races and we believe there is huge room for growth in both.”
Spectators and participants will also be able to watch professional BMX riders compete, visit the health and fitness expo, and enjoy live music by the Museum of Making Music.
Carlsbad residents of all cycling abilities are encouraged to take part in the ride and learn more about the ways in which cycling contributes to a healthier lifestyle. Fred related, “To be able to provide a local event showing the fun, excitement, and health benefits of cycling is a dream come true.”
